L4 legal, moral and ethics analysis

Legal, Ethics  and Moral analysis

Legal: Legal issues in media terms are issues/ problems which could arise at anytime of the process of any media product that is related to the law.

moral: A moral issue is an issue in media which is essentially about what is right and wrong

Ethical issues: If something is right or wrong.

My ident will be based on either the daytime schedule so relating to morning noon and nighttime and will have something to do with the witty banter that Dave portrays. My second idea would have been something relating to the four seasons in the year so an ident related to summer, winter, autumn and spring.

Ofcom are the ones who are responsible for regulating television idents and they do so to protect viewers from all sorts of things and they have control of many different sectors of communication.

Treatment

The brief is simply to create idents for the freeview channels and to do so by creating idents of different durations. The idents can be seasonal meaning they could be applied to the different seasons in the year and they can be part of a daytime schedule meaning they can be based around breakfast time and lunchtime. I have interpreted it by finding out that ideally this needs to be created for a niche channel which does not have many viewers and this way we can create the idents in such a way so that they are memorable.

The purpose of the ident is essentially to inform the channels viewers and even educate them on what the channel may be about because the channel may showcase programmes related to the weather so we could create a seasonal ident for that channel so that the viewers have some idea what the ident is based upon.

A synopsis of my idea would be to create a ident which relates to either seasons such as autumn or winter and even to relate it around a daytime schedule because these are basic animations which all viewers would understand because the channel may be a niche channel however the majority of the viewers could be a mix of all age ranges meaning the ident could appeal to everyone who watches the channel. This way all people would understand and enjoy the ident because everyone knows it and it is not confusing. Since the ident will be based around a daytime schedule I will have people eating breakfast, lunch and dinner meals outside whilst showing the time of day such as morning, noon and night. This shows viewers that they can tune into the channel whenever they want. After each ident I will put the logo of the channel which is Dave and this will be right at the very end of the ident.

If I am doing a channel such as Dave then its core audience range from men in the 20's and 30's which is an audience of a 10 year age range an this is just the majority of their viewers so there may even be more. This being said I would have to create something which would appeal to them so apart from doing seasonal idents and daytime idents I could do idents linked to some of the programmes which are showcased on the channel.

In terms of the medium I am working in it would be television because the task is to create a variety of idents for a television channel meaning my finished product would be showcased on TV. I know this because Dave is a channel which is on TV so the medium would be television.

The running time as displayed on the brief would have to be either a 60 second and two 30 second idents or four 30 second idents and for the idents I will create it would be two 60 second idents which  would essentially be better as they would be more detailed.

initial ideas.

Ident history p2

Dave is a channel which is available to view on Freeview and in terms of its history the channel itself was founded in 1998. The motto for the channel was "the home of witty banta"

As referenced by the official Google bio A overview for Dave would be: Dave is a British free-to-air television channel owned by UKTV, which is available in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The channel took the name Dave in October 2007, but it had been on air under various identities and formats since October 1998.

The show has been known to feature some of the most funniest and entertaining content such as Eddie eats America and other interesting and engaging programmes. The channel is owned by UKTV which is BBC studios.

There has been multiple different idents for the channel and below are some images of them:
This current ident for Dave would have taken place some where around 2014 December time because it was to celebrate Christmas and was done so by adding a red background alongside a image of Santa and in the centre was the logo of the channel with Christmas decorations around it.

This ident was very simple and that's why I think it was unique because it shows a waiter with a black lid which says Dave in  bold writing which is good because it is not complexed and easy to read for the audience if it was hard to understand the name of the channel then viewers become uninterested and Dave lose viewers. This was created in 2016

This is the logo for Dave and it is also very simple and easy to read with very few designs but again it looks nice to view and people wouldn't want it to look overcomplicated. When talking about advancements I would say that there has not been much improvement but at the same time there wouldn't really need to be any improvements made because it does not look as if it needs major improvement. Overall the concept that is applied should always stay the same and that is that the purpose would be to inform and entertain.

Initial research into audio visual products

                                                                 Dave
1) Dave is a television channel available to users who have sky and virgin but also to people who have freeview and the channel showcases a wide variety of entertaining shows to viewers such as "Eddie eats America" which is a show about how one of the worlds strongest man eats in his day to day life and also shows such as border force which shows how some of the biggest airports in America deal with people who try to illegally enter the country.

2)The target audience for these channels would be people who enjoy entertainment but it may also be for people who enjoy food as well. We know this because the channel showcases programmes about these topics so people who enjoy them will watch them. This could range from teens to adults as the topics and the shows presented on the channel are quite well known and of interest to many people.

3)In term of the message I think Dave tries to embrace culture in the UK because there are logos and idents of the channel with a Santa picture and a red background accompanied by Christmas decorations and lights. This shows that the message that Dave try to incorporate is that they celebrate  the spirit of Christmas and religious holidays and add them into their channel which convey to the audience that they are multicultural.

4)This is a ident which was used very recently by Dave and I would describe it as simple and straight to the point which is something the channel likes to present itself as. The logo is bold and in white which makes it stand out so that the audience know what show they are watching.
If the logo was not like this then people who are watching the channel would be confused and may be mislead.

5) The overall purpose of idents for the channel is to identify what the channel is to viewers and also for branding because not only does it signify what channel is on but it also could potentially inform new viewers as to what channel they are on so it is branding itself to viewers which helps gain publicity and attract more viewers  and also it is good for marketing and selling their products which in this case would be the shows they have on their channels

                                                                  Food network
1) For the food network channel it is a channel which showcases the  many different culinary experiences had by journalists to chefs as well just showing how different people prepare food. The shows the channel has would be popular amongst food fans and these are shows such as diners drive inns and dives which is very popular show staring Guy Fieri who is a chef and the show is about him visiting popular and iconic restaurants which were recommended by fans of the show. The channel showcases other programmes such as the pioneer women who is a home cook that likes to show us how she makes food for her family.

2) The target audience for the channel would be people who enjoy food and also could potentially be people who enjoy traveling as many of these shows have people reviewing food all over the world.
I know this because I myself have watched food network many times and often tend to enjoy the history that food has behind it as well as the different areas of the world that the shows are filmed at because it shows how different cultures eat and the type of food they eat. The target audience could be people of all age ranges because food is something that mostly everyone enjoys. So many people would watch the channel and these include people of all ages and races.

3) The logos are different colored circles so there are black circles ,white circles and also red circles. There are also logos shaped like food trays which would again signify that the channel is based around food. It is a simple lay out and is in white so it is bright and stands out.

4) The current ident is a bunch of profiteroles stacked on a table and there are decorations on it to make it look appealing and delicious to viewers which makes them want to carry on watching the channel. Faded in the background would be the picture of a kitchen which again shows the audience that the show is about food and cooking.

5) The overall purpose of this ident would be to engage the audience and also to inform them on what channel they are watching. This would also be to entertain the audience and keep them waiting for the next show to come on. Lastly it would also be for marketing/branding purposes and for instance this could be for new people who are tuning into the channel but also for current viewers who have been viewers for a long period of time. So overall there are different reasons why the ident would have a purpose but they all are mainly there to attract viewers.

Defining audio visual promos

Audio visual products definition:
A audio visual promo is a tool created by a media company which is designed to attract attention for a specific target audience about an up and coming product and the whole life cycle of that product. It is mainly released before the completion of the product simply to inform, educate and entertain the products target audience. This could also be done to potentially increase the sales of the product before it is released.

What they are: These media products have various forms and most of which are always recognizable such as a music promo which are short audio visual advertising pieces which are used to promote a music video which would be released afterwards. They may have different durations however they usually contain images of the artist and the background of where the video is filmed.

Trailers can also be done for films and tv programmes by which the target audiences can view a short piece of the film/ programme in order to gain depth and understanding about what the full piece would be about. These trailers and promos can be found through mulitple social media outlets such as youtube and Instagram.

Understand the purpose of audio visual promos

                                                      Music video:
In this music video by Pharell Williams I feel like the moral of the song is to inform his audience that regardless of your position in life you should always try to be happy hence the songs name"happy"
As you can see the promo shows a variety of people most of which from different ethnic backgrounds to try and show diversity and they all seem to be either smiling or showing that they are happy.

It is a good way to inform the audience to stay happy because he is promting positivity through his music. This not only tells his audience that his audience to be happy in life but he also conveys it through the music video which happens to be catchy so if people are singing the song then they are being reminded to stay happy so it is a great way to inform and educate people not only of Pharrels music but also of his mindset and his thoughts on life. This also tells the audience that Pharell Williams can be seen as a guy who doesn't take life too seriously which can also inform the audience to not stress in life.

The audience for this music video would be everyone because the directors of the video are trying to put all different kinds of people in the video from kids to adults and different skin colored people to show that we as the human race no matter the colour should all be happy and by using people from all different ethnic backgrounds also tells the audience that the artist is diverse and welcoming to everyone. For the age we see a variety of ages ranging from kids to adults and the gender is both because we see men and women. The interests would be to be happy and the locations of the videos are filmed all over from churches to highways. Lastly for the ethnicity it would appeal to all ethnic groups as most of these groups are in the song already so it would appeal to all the audience.

In terms of the codes and conventions used in the video we can see close ups of the singer and also we can see facial expressions and hand gestures such as dance moves which are performed with a smile on the dancers face again indicating the message of the song which is to be happy. This appeals to the audience because the moral of the song influences positivity which is what people in life like to see if the song was promoting something else then it wouldnt be as popular amongst people.

In this video I feel as if the whole meaning behind the song was to try and tell people to always be happy in life and I can say this because we as an audience see people from all ranges and ethnic backgrounds dancing and smilling no matter how hard their situation is and we see them in all different locations. It was very effective when conveying this message. All thrree products come together extremely well because the technical quality such as the camera angles are used in an elaborate and articulate way to try and grab the attention of the audience and also the message of the song is catchy which implies the viewers know what the song is about and it is a simple word to remember which is "happy" and the narrative is easy to understand  however I feel the message is the most effective of them all because it is simple and that what will make a message so good to understand because if the message of the song was complex and not many people understood it then not as many people would have viewed the song.

                                                      Game trailer:

This is a scene in the new Call of duty trailer which shows a picture of a juggernaut in action and this is used to inform and educate people who are most likely gamers that this is an addition in the game so that those who are going to be purchasing the product are given an insight as to what will be available to use in the game.

Majority of Call of duty users buy the game to play multiplayer which is also known as online. This is a screen grab taken from the multiplayer trailer released by the company themselves on youtube and I think it is a great way to show player of the game some of the types of characters that will be available to use when the game is released. Which is a great way to sell their product.

The audience for this video game promotion would also be a range of different people because despite the fact that it is promoting violence and shooting guns the game itself is actually played by a range of different age groups. In terms of the ages and genders it would be between teenagers and middle aged men with the exception of a few women because men are mainly the people who the fanbase of the game is made up of. This is because it is mainly males who play video games. Of course the interests would be people who have an interest in video games particularly ones about war and guns. The location wouldn't really matter as people all over the world play call of duty and it is known globally. All ethnic groups play call of duty as well.

For the codes and conventions there are multiple camera angle techniques which are used to try and intrigue the audience and with the trailer we can see they have tried to make it look as innovative as they possibly can to try and show their audience how good they game will be so that people can buy it.

The message this connotes would be to simply buy the game because the reason they showed all these different perspectives and characters  which you can play as is so that the audience get roped in and want to get involved because then they would want to buy the game.

Theres no real meaning of the game but if the graphics are good and fun to play then people would  want to buy it.

                                           TV ident:

The BBC logo can be seen by the audience and it has a faded circle with the logo inside which can be used to inform the audience about the channel they are watching. The purpose of this could be mainly be to promote the channel to the audience but in a way the logo could also educate people as to what channel they are watching incase they do not already know. In other words by BBC showing this before the show starts they are basically selling their product which is their channel.

The audience for BBC one would be people from all age ranges because they show a range of TV shows and programmes which are aimed at people from these different age ranges. I would say the age ranges from 12 to 60 year olds. The gender would be both and their interests would be news, drama, education and sports. The locations would be the UK and ethnicity would be all ethnic groups because most shows which are broadcasted tend to have actors of all ethnic backgrounds to show diversity. They would expect  it to be informative and engaging because otherwise it would not be up to their standards as this is what BBC has built its reputation on.
The codes and conventions could be the angle and the shot of the logo because we can see the BBC logo is in the middle of the screen to try and signify to the audience the channel they are watching and the logo is in bold bright letters because it wants to stand out to the viewers.

I think the messages that this logo conveys would be to inform the audience about what channel they are watching and by doing so they also are promoting themselves. It is effective in my opinion because of the way that is displayed. They display it by adding the red background and you can see the BBC logo in the center in big bold letters and the colour is white which makes it stand out.

The technical qualities, messages and narratives compare to each other and they are quite similar. For the technical qualities there are things such as the camera angle and I think that there are not that many  camera angles in this ident however the message is to probably tell the audience what they are watching and the narrative is the same. The message would be the most effective for me because it is simple and straightforward. It is just the name of the channel.
